Joseph Pulitzer's birthday is April 10, 1847. Typically these prizes are announced near this anniversary.
Today is the day the Pulitzer Prize winners will be announced for works done in the previous year.
The Pulitzer Prize has been awarded since 1917 for achievements in newspaper, magazine and online journalism, literature, and musical composition in the United States. It's named after Hungarian-born American Joseph Pulitzer, who died in 1911. He was a prominent newspaper publisher whom endowed Columbia University with $2 million dollars to develop a School of Journalism in 1912.
In 1917 the school began awarding a prizes for exceptional journalism named for its benefactor. Today it is considered the most prestigious award in Journalism, Letters (Books), Drama and Music and Special Awards and Citations categories.
